Musikminne från Janie May

Elektronisk pop bjuder Janie May på.

As a kid I was incredibly, incredibly shy about singing in front of others. I was always obsessed with music and dance but for whatever reason, I would wait until my family members were in a different room or out of the house to practice singing. I remember rushing over to the CD player to put on a Mariah Carey album and getting lost in Toni Braxton and Whitney Houston melodies in the car. Music always transported me to another world. To this day, the beauty of certain harmonies or arrangements leaves me at a loss for words. There is something otherworldly and transcendental about a great song.

One of the funniest music related memories and stories that I have is from my college days. By this time I was a bit less shy about singing in front of others and I frequented an underground New York City karaoke bar called Karaoke Cave. It has since closed but what I loved about it was its no frills, open room style of karaoke. This meant that inevitably, you would be singing in front of strangers who, by the end of the night, might be friends. A few days before my 21st birthday I went with a few friends for what we expected would be a relatively unusual night. We were in for a big surprise, however.

We arrived fairly early by karaoke standards, probably around 9pm. To our shock, as soon as we walked in we spotted a major pop star, who I will not name, singing her own songs with a group of about 10 friends by her side. What were the chances, we thought. To make this even crazier, there was no one else there, other than the bartender and two of her bodyguards. Thinking I was clever, I told my friend that she should stand near the celebrity, and I tried to get a photo of her in the background. Not even a second later, one of her bodyguards came up to me and told me that I needed to delete the photo or he would destroy it. I felt my heart pumping super fast as I debated what to do. I folded and deleted it. To this day I wonder if that was the right move! I have not had a more entertaining celebrity sighting since then and doubt that I will.
